Description:
SpaceDM9 is the sequel (or…prequel?) to SpaceDM5. The SpaceDM series is a set of Skulltag multiplayer maps created by the amazing Jetsons. The maps range in style, gameplay, and visual fidelity and all of them take place in space (all the time).
SpaceDM9 was set to be a much larger project with varying locales and themes all set in void-like, open maps. The gameplay was shifted towards lots of height variation and focus on vertical architecture and gameplay set in SPACE. At one point there were many maps in production for this project, all of which were looking to be pretty spectacular. I was approached by esselfortium, the founder of the SpaceDM series and leader of this project, to see if I could contribute some maps. I was very interested in the project, so I set out to make two bare layouts for either myself or someone else on the project to detail and polish. I also had plans to details some maps. In particular, one that I was very interested in working on, was going to be a sort of steampunk cityscape with brand-new textures by essel.
Sadly, interest in the project waned after some time went by. I wasn’t aware of it at the time, but essel released the project and, I’m assuming, declared it “finished”. There are a total of 3 maps. Essel used my second bare layout and created what has to be one of the most beautiful and mind-bending deathmatch map I have ever seen. The name of the map is Shogouki and it is in a sort of cyberpunk Japanese urban theme. There are all sorts of flashy lights, details, and set-pieces in that map that it ranks as one of the coolest Doom maps I have ever seen in my life. It really makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside that my layout was used to create this one-of-a-kind map. The other two maps are entirely essel’s creations, and both are also excellent. Even if you’re not a fan of DM maps, I would highly recommend giving this a spin just to gawk at the maps.
The first unfinished layout that I made for this was later used in the 2015 Christmas Extravaganza Map Pack as a map titled Rooftop Jingle Jams.
